National League Interview with Igor Markiewicz
Sep 27, 2020, 11:58 pm

Name: Igor Markiewicz

Age: 22

Height: 6’6

Number: 15

Position: Forward

1) What is your first impression of the town of Killarney?

Killarney has been great so far! Great first impression. I know Kerry gets a lot of rain but Weather has been really good lately. People Have been super welcoming and the atmosphere is amazing. A lot different to Dublin where I have lived before. Got a chance to experience the local landscape and had few hikes and cycles around already and I am loving it. Looking forward living here for this year and who knows maybe beyond that too!

2) What are your thoughts on the season ahead and your new team mates?

I am looking forward for this season a lot mainly because of a new setting. I have been previously in a situation with a team freshly entered into National League so I am confident I can contribute a lot for Cougars. It is going to be interesting with the whole Covid situation how the season unravels and no doubt teams will be determined to come top of the conference and I think we will surprise a few teams. After a couple of practices, I am loving my teammates. Guys have been really welcoming and encouraging and there is a wide range of talent on the team. A few of experienced lads whom I played against before and know quite well as well as few younger guys on the team. With all this in mind there’s no doubt we will face plenty of challenges. I’m super excited to see what we can achieve this season and make some noise.

3) What game are you looking forward to most?

I definitely think high of every single team in our conference. As I mentioned I think we will surprise a few teams but no doubt everyone will be fighting for that top spot. Likes of Carlow and Portlaoise will be very tough to beat but can’t overlook other teams either as they will try their hardest to win. Especially going against Pauls as an opening game, it will be an interesting one!!

4) When and why did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball for my school team around late second year/third year, I was probably 14 at the time. I was always a sports guy I played almost every sport there is. Around that time though a lot of my friends tried to persuade me to play basketball for my school team as I had a massive growth spurt and they finally got me into it. I quickly got into watching NBA and video clips of Vince Carter and his dunks and I just fell in love with the sport and ended up joining Dublin Lions the following year.

5)  What advice would you give to our younger players looking to reach National League level in the coming years?

As cliche as it sounds, if you are a young guy trying to play national or super league you got to work your butt off. You have to do that little bit extra that others won’t be willing to do. I would definitely advise to watch a lot of basketball. Watch videos and games played before and see what players do and how they do things. Pick a player at your position and watch what they do on the court to help their team win. One thing I’d say is to for sure not take anything for granted once you make it. Being on a National or Super league team is a privilege that not everyone experiences. Not everyone can or deserves to play at that level, so be thankful for such opportunities once you get there and remember where you came from and your path that got you there.

National League Interview with Justin Tuason (Captain)
Sep 27, 2020, 11:54 pm

Name: Justin Tuason (C)

Age: 26

Height: 6’3

Number: 24

Position: Point Guard

 1) What are your thoughts on the season ahead?

think this season is incredibly important  for building a foundation and establishing a culture for the club going forward.

2) How is the team shaping up in practice?

The team has been coming together gradually at practice. The intensity has been picking up last few sessions. Still a lot of work to be done to really get where we want to be though.

3) What game are you looking forward to most?

Easily the cup game against St.Paul’s is the one I’m looking forward to most as everyone in the club probably is too. Safe to say we won’t need any motivation heading into that match.

4)When and why did you start playing basketball?

I started playing when I was about 12 mainly because I wasn’t good enough at baseball  anymore but also because I wanted to be like my older brother who had been playing for years.

5) What advice would you give to our younger players looking to reach National League level in the coming years?

My advice to any of the young  kids coming through the ranks would be to always watch basketball. Any level whether it’s college, NBA, WNBA, or even Irish Super League / National League. There’s so much to learn by just watching the game being played at a high level and if you watch it the right way; not just for deep 3’s and dunks but watch the movement off the ball or defensive rotations that’s how you enhance your basketball IQ  without even stepping foot into a gym.
